After Effects stretch text help

Hi, I am trying to stretch text in an after effects file. I converted my text layer to a shape layer and added a path keyframe. However the bounding box for each letter does not show up. I can manipulate the whole word but not the individual letters. Does someone know how to fix this?

Try to enable Toggle Mask and Shape Path button.
