After Effects V 22.1.1 Crash on Mac OS

Hey there, 

My After effects file consists of just shapes and Ai files - it's only a small project but for three days now, the programme speed is slow and it's been freezing or crashing at regular intervals (often without saving).

The screen doesn't usually even display an error code or crash report- however this did pop up today: 

After effects can't continue: Damaged layer. (26::186)

All I'm trying to do is move the path of a shape layer under an alpha stencil...

If anyone has a solution for this I'd be incredibly grateful!
