After Effects V23 very slow on M1 Ultra Studio Mac

When rendering from the latest (non-beta) version of AE it takes 5.32m on new iMac but 11 hours on new Studio Mac with M1 Ultra Chip with the same settings.

This is John from the After Effects Engineering team. Sorry to see you're experiencing this issue on the M1 Studio. Would you be able to share the slow-rendering project with us? If so, feel free to message me directly. That would likely be the best way to diagnose what is causing the slowdown.

Apart from the project, some other factors that could be different between the two systems:

• Storage: are both systems rendering from/to internal drives, a network drive, etc?
• Are both systems running the same version of macOS?
• If any plug-ins are installed, are the same plug-ins installed on both systems?

Lastly, what are the specific specs for both machines?

Unfortunately I can’t share the file as the contents client sensitive and we have an NDA in place, but I have answer the other other questions below. We are finding that it isny exclusive to this project, it seems to be all projects.

Both the Studio Mac and the iMac are new models and were rendering to and from the same external drive via USB-C connected directly to each machine (not at the same time).

Both machines have AE 23.1.0 installed via Creative Cloud. They also both rendered with the same prefs and settings in terms of render settings and memory allocation.

I have attached the specs for both machines.

Hi Darren,

Thank you for that additional information. Would you mind reattaching the specs for each machine? They don't appear to have successfully attached to your last message.

On the Mac Studio, it would be helpful if you could enable application logging before attempting a render and share the log with us. To enable application logging:

1. Select Help > Enable Logging and quit After Effects when prompted.
2. Relaunch After Effects and attempt a render
3. Go to Preferences > General and select "Reveal Preferences in Finder"
4. Please share the After Effects Log.txt file located in the "logs" folder revealed in the preferences folder.
