After Effects warning: Reading past end of file (CS6)

Had a power outage while working on a project and I get this error when trying to reopen it. Just opens up the usual empty Untitled Project instead. Is there anything I can do?

Sorry to hear about the power.  Make a new project and import the problem project file into it.  If it doesn't work, you're hosed.

I get the same error, followed by something about it being corrupted, but then it imports...something. Can't find the source for any of the layers so replaces them with placeholders. So I just have a bunch of things called "Recovered" in the project listing. All my expressions have failed too, unable to find referenced compositions.

Try this:  double-click on a missing piece of footage.  Navigate to the correct location of the file.  Double-click on it.  If  there are other files that AE needs in  that folder AE SHOULD find them, too.  If it doesn't, you'll have to do it file by file.

Hey, the power went out!  Consider yourself lucky you have anything at all!

And if the above procedure doesn't work, You're a victim of loss of power and you're hosed.  Sorry.

The missing files are all named "Recovered". No indication of what they were.

Why should a power outage mean losing everything, though? Surely it reverts to the last saved version?

If the currently-open AEP file was corrupted by the system losing power then of course it won't re-open properly.

Unlike with things like MS Office, After Effects' auto save feature does not automatically revert to previous versions after a crash, you have to go open it yourself from the "After Effects Auto-Save" folder.

I don't see an Auto-Save folder for AE, only PP.

Auto-save has to be enabled in Preferences->Auto-Save. By default it then creates the subfolder next to your project file, but you can specify a different location.

The exact same thing happened to me !! But thank God I managed to solve. It was extreme but basically you have to use a data recovery software. I used RECUVA
