Hi all
I looked around for a solution for a long time, but couldn't find. Feel free to point me in the right direction if this is old hat.
I'm modelling a simple iPad type device in 3d and my mac pro is only configured to use the Cinema 4D renderer (can't use ray traced).
The problem is this, as I rotate the camera around the object looking slightly up at it, I'm getting a lot of aliasing. Is there any way to avoid this?

Well, what are actualyl your render settings in the C4D scene? Typically one would simply crank up the AA settings and use a more advanced filter like Sinc or Gaussian...

Hi Mylenium, thanks for the reply.
Forgive me if I come across a bit naive, the scene is built in after effects with an extruded shape layer using C4D renderer in AE. The quality settings (and so the AA settings too) are cranked up to max. It's rendering at full resolution too. If I switch back to Classic 3D, obviously the extrusion disappears, but so does the aliasing.
You say use a more advanced filter - are you talking about an effect in AE? It sounds like you're talking about the extruded shape as part of a C4D render.
I'm trying not to use C4D as I'm due to pass this on to a total newbie, who wants to be able to mess with the camera angles easily and render out quickly.
Please feel free to slap me down for being stupid here

I also you Mac book pro with cinema 4d Render, make sure the Fast Preview is set to Final Quality & Draft 3d is off. Refer the screenshots.
Draft 3d & Fast preview is set to adaptive -
Draft 3d is off & Fast preview is set to Final Quality -
I have also set the Cinema 4D render options to Maximum/Extreme in the composition settings & View to 100% in the composition panel.

Thanks for the help on this, much appreciated.
Fast Draft Previews is off (but this affects the rendered media, not just the preview), C4D renderer options are set to Maximum/Extreme.
View is at 100%. Draft 3D is off (but again only affects the preview, not render, I think).
So I must be missing something else, I guess. Really stumped, but feeling that it must be possible.

The AE settings don't affect the internals of the C4D renderer, so you can't avoid delving into the render settings panel in C4D. All the options I mentioned can be found there.

Thanks again, really appreciate this.
So, last question:
How do I access the C4D settings without leaving AE?
I'm not using a C4D file, so the only option I have within AE is the quality slider in the C4D render options:
I'm assuming Adobe wouldn't add a render engine to their application which gives you control over basic 3D properties, but for which you have to leave the application to alter most of the settings. If I do have to go into C4D to alter the settings, do I do it by altering the default settings for C4D to see an improvement in the aliasing in AE? I'm confused (not hard to confuse me).
I'd normally do this kind of thing in C4D and then import the file, extract all the cameras, nulls etc, but it seemed like such a simple way to do it if I can just extrude shape layers in AE and such a perfect way to hand off a simple file to someone with little knowledge of AE and none of C4D.

Hi LennyLenfestey,
I do know you can set up various takes and then call them up with After Effects. Would that assist your workflow?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin
I didn't know that trick, awesome. I'll definitely be using that for my own projects.
Unfortunately, it doesn't help in this instance. I'm looking to stay entirely in Ae, just extruding a shape layer using the C4D engine (the only renderer available to me for extrusions). The idea is that it's something very simple that my client (who doesn't do C4D at all) can mess with at a later date without using C4D.
Also, I'm finding it hard to understand why there is this level of aliasing in this case, even when set to the highest quality settings. It's just odd.
Thanks for the help.

Sorry, Lenny. I am not seeing this anomaly either. What kind of computer are you working with?
Thanks,
Kevin

Did you ever solve this?

I do have this problem too, everything is maxed out in the settings of C4d renderer, but i am facing to the aliasing problem with per character 3D layer... 😞

In After Effects, under the Cineware effect settings, go to render and set to render settings to "current" instead of "viewport". I was looking around a long time for this small piece info, its an easy thing to miss when "current" doesn't sound like the HQ setting one looks for before rendering
