Animating a Flowing Kilt in After Effects – Best Practices?

Community Beginner ,

Hey folks!

I’m animating a character wearing a traditional Scottish kilt and struggling to get the fabric to move naturally. I’m aiming for a stylized but believable sway during a walk cycle. So far I’ve used the Puppet Tool and mesh warp, but it still feels stiff.

I’m referencing real-world motion from garments like those at The Utility Kilt, which helps with visual weight and bounce—but translating that into AE has been tricky.

Key issues:

  • Natural response to leg movement

  • Adding secondary motion without floatiness

  • Avoiding weird overlaps/twists

Any advice, expressions, or plugin recs? Bonus points for cloth animation tips or examples.

Appreciate the help!
