Animating (transform) of image layer using mask

Hi community!

Been trying to figure out how to animate image layers' transform (position) with masks, the same way you would animate texts - Draw mask shape, animate->position, set end keyframe, set start keyframe. You'll get a text moving in from a blank space outside the mask.

But I couldn't replicate this on any image layer, for example a logo with texts. Masking out the text's part of the logo, even by adding the 'transform' effect, it would not obey the mask layer, and in fact moves the mask layer. Is there any way to animate the image layer with the mask playing it's part?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

This is just not "How stuff works". You need to isolate whatever you want to animate on separate layers just like you would do in Photoshop. Using masks and shape layer paths is simply achieved by copy & pasting their data into the motion path of an object and from there you could also enable auto-orient so it aligns with curving paths. You may want to read the online help on soem basics.

Ah ok thanks for this! Good to know I haven't been doing it wrong by asking for working files from clients. Thanks again!

You can draw a mask path on any layer, select the path, then go to the Window/Create Nulls From Paths.jsx menu and choose Trace Path to create a null that follows the path. You end up with two keyframes that you can adjust to control speed and a checkbox to make the motion loop.

Then you can Shift + Parent any other layer to the new null you have created, and it will auto-orient to the path and follow the null. You can edit the path or even animate the mask path, and the Null and the Layer will follow. If you do not want the Layer to auto-orient, you can tie the position of any layer to the position of the null with a simple pickwhip expression.

If I understand your design goals, that workflow should handle it.
