Animation Presets missing

Ok so I'm trying to do some school assignments on after effects, except all of my animation presets seem to be faulty. They are downloaded however whenever I try to open one up I get the "unsupported filetype or extension" error. I've tried troubleshooting this several different ways, launching through Bridge, going through the animation tab and entering it that way. I've tried the older version of after effects and undownloaded/redownloaded both old and new versions several times, clearing all of my preferences and my cache. When I looked at the files in Bridge they seemed to be a little short on information so maybe that's the issue? They're all present, I literally just can't use them, any advice is appreciated!

The Bridge thing is a known issue/ bug. Presets can't be applied from there currently, only the Effects & Presets palette. The rest is not clear. Does this affect all presets or just a few? Which version were your custom presets from school created with? Do the stock AE presets work? Have you used the correct layer type? Some more info would help.
