I am trying to replicate the effect shown in this tutorial: https://youtu.be/s1D7Y-NqslA but when it gets to the auto trace part AE only creates masks for the top right quadrent of the image
see my screenshot attached.
Any idea what it is I'm doing wrong? The project was created by right clicking on a sequence (which is 5 seconds of a still frame) in Premier and selecting replace with After Effects composition. Should that make a difference? I'm really confused!

Is the JPEG image scaled up?

You are probably running out of system resources because you have not eliminated enough detail in the pre-comp. Your settings for auto trace are also way too tight. I would give Tolerance about 10 or 20 pixels and increase the Minimum Area to 20 or 30 pixels. Auto Trace can be a real resource hog, and you have a lot of very small areas with a lot of tight corners. If your comp frame rate is higher than 30, reduce it. This kind of animation does not need 50 or 60 fps. Most hand-drawn animation (think Buggs Bunney) was only 12 drawings per second. They just photographed each animation cell twice. They look great.
Let us know if that helps.
System, OS, and AE version would also help.

So it looks like it ws a scaling issue. I had a jpeg in Premier that had soem scaling applied to it before I slelected Replace Clip with After Effects composition.
Once I modified the jpeg to be comp resolution it all worked properly.
Thanks
