black preview for nested composition, rotoscope attempt

I rotoscoped a segment of my clip in a layer, then went back to the composition and it is black?

I need to add text but the composition preview window is black.

there is not enough information from the Screenshot you post, even they are too low resolution, anyway for me it looks like you just need to put your cursor somewhere on the timeline. looks like you're out of the timeline range so just scrab the timeline with the indicator and you should see your footage.
