Can't render a mov file. Says unsupported video codec.

I think installing quick time is how to resolve issue. But im afrraid to download quicktime from internet because I'm scared of viruses.

Is there any other way to fix this? I  need to render a quicktime.

What codec? There are hundreds of them. What OS? What version of AE? I'm assuming Windows because of the worry about viruses, but if you get QT from Apple and are running an Anti Virus program you should be fine.

Make sure your version of AE is up to date and if that does not solve the problem we need workflow and codec details down to the last decimal point. Installing QuickTime may be the only solution but we can't know for sure without details.

The version is 2017 for Aftereffects. I have windows 10

What version of 2017? Apple makes QuickTime so that's where you look for the download.

I went on Apple website and downloaded quicktime 7. 7

then i rendered a mov and im still having issues with it. I moved it to my onedrive and it says there was a problem loading the video

We still don't know anything at all about the format you have chosen or your workflow. Without details it's pretty hard to point you in the right direction. Unless you are an expert in video formats and compression it is probably not a good idea to create any custom settings for your comp or your renders.

I am guessing that you have an After Effects project file that started in a Mac and that you are not opening on your Windows computer.  The unsupported CODEC is probably Animation or ProRes.

When you installed QuickTime, you would want to do a custom install and only do the QuickTime Components.  It's QuickTime Player that goes online and is no longer receiving updates from Apple (and as such a potential security threat).

If you're looking to have a file that can be player from OneDrive when viewing it in a web browser, you want to go with a H264 MP4 instead of MOV  (while you can store an MOV in cloud storage, it is unlikely that it will play in a web browser from cloud storage).

Go back to your project and add the Comp to Adobe Media Encoder and the use H264 for the Format and Match Source - High Bit Rate fir the preset.  Or you can drag and drop your rendered QuickTime file to the Adone Media Encoder Queue tab and choose the Format and Preset to create an MP4.

I think maybe sometime its as simple as how you composed your project in AE that could promt this codec error code or issue with rendering and converting files after in a thrid party convertor like Hand Break. I tried everthing mentioned here and the fix for me was making sure all layered comps had equal lengths and then maybe brought into a main comp before rendering might've helped too, ultimately staying organized so its easier for processors to process. ✌
