Failry new to Ater Effects. When I select the 3D option on a shape layer, the background of that layer turns black (shape stays visible). Also makes any shape or solid layers above or below  disappear (or turn black). What am I missing? Thanks.

You need to be looking at the Active Camera view. That is the only view that will render. The other views are only for aligning 3D layers in AE's 3D world. 2D layers do not show up and only the Active Camera view will render.

The old hardware acceleration bugs striking again, unfortunately. Since you're on a Mac you have limited options, but of course you should check the relevant preferences, update your graphics driver if possible and check the relevant system settings. Also, since your composition uses a non-standard size you may want to check if it works with a regular HD-sized comp. Hardware acceleration can be really weird and quirky in that regard.
