Color, font and text does not change in some parts

I cannot edit and change color, font, rext/numbered values of the layers at all on some sections of the project template am working on (They are animated) it just types in the background of the text/numerical values but nothing changes and it just types blank with nothing to see and the layer characters do not change.

This also happens on other sections of the project, the color selects but it never changes. 

Any ideas why this is and workarounds?

It might be the template has some "clever" restrictions on it.  If nothing else you could try using the Tint effect to change the colour, but you might be better asking the template creator.

As @ShiveringCactus is telling you, a lot of templates have controls for colors and some other parameters associated to Expression controls effect. If you select any layer and press "EE" (two times E) all parameters with associated expressions will be revealed. This way you can view what other layers or parameters are controllinng source texts and color of the layers.

Open up the flow chart and look for the layers and effects you are trying to edit. Without actually seeing your comp or knowing what template you are trying to edit, it's pretty hard to guess where the controls are.
