Comp and Project Version Control, Remote Work: Latest Best Practices?

Advanced users out there: Where are we at these days with version control for both projects and comps within projects?  I've been at studios that have extensive custom automation, and I have my own habits and workflows, but I'd love to know what people are doing to keep track of R&D versions, revisions, deliverables, conforms, etc.  Seems like nowdays most projects have delivery specs with multiple aspect ratios and layouts for digital, social platforms, broadcast, streaming etc, so it can get pretty crazy to track a change across all versions.  I'd love to hear any recommendations for tools, techniques, etc. that people like for managing very large & complex projects, especially in a remote work environment with multiple artists, producers and editors on a job.  Cheers
