Hello, I work for Communications and Marketing in-house for a University. We are getting more and more requests for videos. My machine cannot handle Adobe After Effects very well. What kind of Specs should I be looking for in a new computer?
The minimum requirements are laid out in teh online help. Anything beyond that can only be handled based on a) what specs your current computer has and b) what new computer you intend to buy/ you have the budget for and c) what specifc kind of work you intend on doing. Otherwise generic "What's the best computer for AE?" questions typically end up being endless and pointless discussions about hypotheticals. Creating motion graphics has different requirments than visual effects and then there's all levels of complexity from simple to super fancy plus on a very general note the interactions of different parameters in AE are way too complex for blanket advise along the lines "Jus buy component X." A beefy graphics card does nothing if you don't use any of its features and plenty of RAM is still no good if your computer has slow disks and can't "feed" AE or build disk caches. See?! This is way more complex, so the more specific you are, the better the chnaces you'll actually get some useful answers.
This article would be a good place to start your research. Puget Systems (who collab'd with SOM on this) is an excellent resource for learning about hardware for creative tasks, even if you don't ultimately purchase a system from them. https://www.schoolofmotion.com/blog/after-effects-computer
