Have checked the permissions issues and deleted preferences to get ae working in Sonoma.
I would say every third project I open is crashing out at about 95%
turning hardware acceleration off in Display and Import doesn't help.
Thought I would mention it here in case there is a memory leak or something.
I assume Apple just turned everything upside down for no reason again.
drive is encrypted if that helps
Can someone just write a bit of ML to tag this for me??

Hi tristansummers,
Sorry to hear about the crash. Could you let us know if there are any error messages or crash reports? Which drive are you opening projects from? Is it an external drive? If so, can you try bringing the project and footage to the internal drive and see if you're able to open it?
Let us know the outcome.
Thanks,
Nishu

Are there any third-party plug-ins? To start, can you try using After Effects in Safe Mode and see if that brings any change?
Let us know.
Thanks,
Nishu

It is pretty sporadic. I will do more research into why it happens. assume just another thing mac thing they didn't bother to test

I think this is a WORKSPACE issue. I think if you have changed workspaces. or the file had a changed workspce, AE is going set workspace to Default, oh er .. which default .. er.. ZZZZZZZZZZZ. Changing permissions on workspace prefs isn't helping. If I just open files with appleO so the workspace isn't trying to change, it doesn't crash.
I am also on an unsupported external screen and adobe isn't very good at UI scaling because they have only had ten years to work on it.
Quicktime player crashes the whole system and I suspect it is a resolution communication issue as well...
Some clues there for you Kojak

Did you ever find out a solution? I'm experiencing similar issues and finally have a little bit of time to try and troubleshoot. My After Effects also sporadically gets hung up at 95% when opening projects from an internal drive. If I import the project, it's fine.
I do have external drives connected and occasionally work from them too. Similar to OP, it doesn't appear to be crashing where it creates a log. I usually end up force quitting After Effects. I have 3rd party plugins installed, but still experienced the issue when starting in safe mode. It happens with simple projects that aren't utilizing any 3rd party plugins. I've restarted the computer, reset preferences and all that.

I think we need to reinstall Rosetta. There are instructions somewhere to do this. Think Rosetta got corrupt in the update to Sonoma. Will let you know if I get chance to try it
