Disk cache

Hi, I've just tried loading AE and a warning came up, something about disk cache space.  I missed it exactly.  How do I locate and transfer whatever I need to exactly?  Thank you, DC

Preferences > Media and Disk Cache

Make sure your cache is pointing somewhere intentional (i.e. not just your Temp folder) and to a drive with enough space to hold the Maximum Disk Cache size.

If you have a separate drive (not your C:/ drive), that's ideal.

Here's the relevant info from Adobe, if you want to learn more.

Thank you.  So, just to clarify, if I simply point to a separate drive (in tbis case, an external one with lots of space), then the overall issue is resolved?  Just so that I can manage this issue, what is the likely minimum space required, so that I can keep an eye on the space available on my external drive?  Thank you, D.

Hi, Imight bne missing something here, but going into preferences > edit did not offer me any way to change anything.  However, in "Media Disk and Cache" There appear to be several options to alter something. Please advise, DC

Correct, Media and Disk Cache is where I directed you.

In this menu, you can set not only the location of the disk casche, but the size as well. This is located immediately above the folder button.

The size is up to you, what you think you need, and what you have room for! By default, it's set to 10% of the drive, up to 100GB. (You can manually set it above 100GB if desired, though.)

Thank you.  I've still not done it yet.  There semss two options: "Maximum Disk Cache size" and "Conformed Media Cache".  So, the first, set to 100GB and point "Choose Folder" to, what, the root directory of an external drive of choice?  The second has two folder options, both presently pointing towards "...\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\" on the C drive.  What to do?

LATEST

Did you check out the Adobe documentation I linked above

Let's start this fresh.

  1. Go to Preferences > Media & Disk Cache.
  2. Click "Empty Disk Cache" to delete existing files.
    • (These are temporary files anyway; you won't lose anything important.)
  3. Assign the disk cache to your hard drive of choice.
    • Adobe recommends assigning this to a secondary drive. A fast SSD is ideal, but not necessary.
    • The specifics are up to you, but I would probably create a folder named "Cache" or similar on the root of the drive, and point the media cache there.
  4. Set the size of your disk cache as desired. 100GB is probably more than generous for you.
  5. Under Conformed Media Cache, do the same steps.
    • Click "Clean Database & Cache" to clear existing files.
    • Set database and cache to preferred folder or drive. In an ideal world, this is a different location than the disk cache, but if you have a fast SSD, it's probably unlikely you'll see any performance hits from having these in the same location.

Both of these will create their own subfolders in the location(s) you direct them to.

As you work, if you feel like things are slowing down after working for a while, it's good to occasionally check under Edit > Purge > All Memory and Disk Cache. You'll get a confirmation before clearing, but you'll be able to see how much of your cache is currently filled. When it's full, After Effects will be slower when creating previews and rendering, because it will be deleting files as it goes to create room for the new ones being created.
