Check out this page for an expression that seems to do what you wish: http://www.motion-graphics-exchange.com/after-effects/A-simple-blink-on-and-off-expression/4bfa66319c098

CS4 can handle expressions too. Go here for more info: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea-7a2ca.html

Sometimes you get the most interesting effects by brute force; you set hold keyframes for the opacity and figure out the placement to give an organic or random feel. Wiggle will sort of do that. But learning how manipulate keyframes is fundamental and should come before learning scripts and expressions unless, of course, you already have a background in such things. I do not. My background is AEv2.0.

Lol. Ive been with after effects for years, and yet the only expression i know is wiggle. But i have several others written down somewhere. I know what they do, i just cant understand how they do.

open opacity alt click the stopwatch, type in wiggle(12,100)
you can change those numbers to whatever you like. 100 being the opacity, and 12 being the speed of the flicker.
