How do you paste paths from Ai to Ae, as stroked paths/shapes?

I'm animating a simple illustration for an AR filter. Can you copy a vector path that is not a closed shape into after effects, to be used as a stroked shape?

I know how to create stroked paths in Ae, and I know how to paste vectors as masks from Ai. I cannot figure out how to paste an open vector path into Ae.
