Leaving a trail of frames...

Hello I'm looking for a way to move a vector shape from one position to another but have the animation add each frame on top of the other so that a trail is left behind. I'd also like to then reverse and have the trail disappear back to the original size. It would be cool if I could change the color too...

This seems like a basic thing so I appologize if I'm just missing the vocabulary to find the feature in After Effects!

It is part of the software and called the Echo effect. Alterante third-party frame accumulation/ video feedback effects can also be used.I suggest you read the online help.

Something like that but hopefully less painful haha! Like, instead of the standard each frame replacing the other, imagine being able to specify the number/interval of frames that remain on the screen before disappearing, maybe with a blending mode setting... maybe this is a feature request but I can hardly believe it's not a part of the software already!
