Missing media AND file name changes

Community Beginner ,

Just opened a work file from March. Same computer, same hard drive, BU drive, etc.

When opening, I got a"missing" message. Various PSDs are missing. Ony thing is, it is now saying that I have two missing files - both are named "Rectangle1.psd" and AE is saying that I'm using one 6 times and the other 4 times. Trouble is, the "10" instances are all originally different files, So, instead of A, B, C, D, E & F on six different tracks, I now hav six instances of Rectangle1.

What would cause this to happen? After Effects has obviously glitched here somehow - changing the file name of the media. When I look at the original file path, it's just jibberish inside of a folder that doesn't exist (because it's a made-up file name, I'm assuming?).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Any help would be apprciated. It is the same

Without exact info about your setup we can't really tell you much, but there are several bugs where AE misinterprets legacy files and there are further bugs even with current versions plus PSD handling. This may simply be a matter of unfortunate circumstances and bugs on top of bugs. Some specific info about your project, the exact file path and layer names, where they are used in the comps, system info and so on may help to pin things down. If this is a Mac, it may also come down to Apple for the umpteenth time having messed with their file system in their OS X updates and some weird Unicode errors and the internal file restore data of the APFS+ system exposing a wrong version of the file with a weird name.

If you import a PSD as a composition then every layer in the Photoshop file will show up as a separate PSD file in the Project Panel and the asset name should reflect both the PSD file name and layer name.

If you duplicate a layer in a timeline the number of uses for that file goes up. Text and Shape layers do not show up in the project panel, but everything else does.

If you fix missing footage from a PSD file imported as a comp you need to make sure that the proper layers have been selected. The problem you are describing could have been caused by not paying very close attention when you replaced the footage. Without screenshots showing a lot of detail, we can't really know what is going on. I don't know of any reported bug in the latest releases of AE that sounds anything like the problem you are having.
