Pasting clips from Premiere into After Effects timeline is encasing all clips in precomps

New Here ,
May 12, 2025 May 12, 2025

This is a new issue between 2024 and 2025 — when I copy from premiere timeline and paste into after effects it is encasing every clip copied into individual precomps. I want to keep files as native as possible between the two program's timelines.

Is there a way to turn off this aut-enveloping of pasted files? (I would love to ask an adobe tech support person if this is a new intended behavior... and if so please don't. but since adobe has hidden all of their methods for contacting support — pushing all of us into this virtual lord of the flies system... i'm not holding my breath)

Thanks for trying. I checked with the product team. According to them, this is the only way to get the Scale to Frame Size from Premiere Pro to After Effects. It seems to be working as expected. Sorry that it might be inconvenient.

Feel free to reach out if there are any other questions.

Thanks,
Nishu

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Hi turquoisedelight,

Thanks for reaching out. I just tried it on my end and I am not able to reproduce the issue. It'll paste all the clips as clips, not as precomps. Could you tell us more about your setup? What's the version of After Effects and Premiere Pro you're using? Are you on MacOS or Windows?

Looking forward to your response. Thanks @kglad for sending the thread to the correct forum.

Thanks,
Nishu

AE : Version 25.2.2 (build 2)

Prem: Version 25.2.3 (Build 4)

Thanks for the response — are you copying with the files unaltered in the premiere timeline?

Apply a speed ramp, motion> scale et al change, or scale to frame size (and i assume other culprits) and it will paste in after effects with the automatic precomp envelope

I went back and checked AE 24.6.6 and Prem 24.6.5 — speed ramps, motion changes do not cause an automatic precomp in AE but if I copy a clip w scale to frame size it will precomp when pasted into after effects

As soon as I read your original question, I figured this would be the answer!
If you look in the Effect Controls panel in Premiere when applying Scale to Frame Size, the Scale value doesn't actually change, so it's kind of happening "under the hood." If you were to use Set to Frame Size (or Fit/Fill to Frame as of 2025), it actually changes the Scale settings of the clip, which transfers into AE without pre-composing.
