Rectangular Magnify Shape

Hi!

As you may know, the "Magnify" effect in both Premiere and After Fx allows you to choose between a square magnification or a circular magnification.  Is there any creative ways I can have a rectangular magnification?

1. create an adjustment layer

2. apply a rectangular mask

3. apply the transform effect and use scale.

I did what you said, but it just makes a black box.

can also work with a shape layer if you set it as an adjustment layer

I think Roei's response will fix your problem but it does sound to me like you made the mask on your image and simple cut it out (resulting in a black hole/box).
