Impossible to know what's going on, since you have not provided any info about the project, your computer and so on. To me this pretty clearly looks like failing hardware acceleration, but as to why and how is anyone's guess, especially since it only affects a layer with a drop shadow, not the whole comp. in any case, the usual steps apply: Check the layer for missing or non-working effects, check your hardware acceleration settings, update your system's graphics driver. Anything beyond that will require much more than a photo without further explanations...
