Selection tolerance for adding verts to a mask extremely small?

Greetings with a question.

I have an illustrator file, pretty standard, downloaded form Adobe Stock impoarted as footage

It's scaled down to 30% and has a simple mask.  

When I try to add a vert to the mask the selection tolerance (when the cursor changes from the box to the plus sign) is

extremely low.  Takes me a few seconds of carefully floatng the cursor around the mask path trying to get the function to switch.

I'm wondering what can be causing this?

It doesn't happen with other .ai files scaled down to 30% or shape layers or anything else. 

Only with this particular file.

Any thoughts?

Hi Gutterfish,

We'd love to test that out. I tried with a few Illustrator files but it seems to be working normally.

Would you mind sharing the file you're experiencing this issue with. Also, what's the zoom level you're working in?

I'm sorry but I have finshed and forgotten more than a dozen projects since that particular one.

I have no idea which project the problem occurred in.

I can tell that it hasn;t happned since and that if it happens again i will let you know.

Probably just some dumb user error on my part.
