Hello - for some reason my shapes layer does not show up in the rendered/exported version of my video. It is not set to a guide layer, as I have seen mentioned as a possible cause when googling, so that is not the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Without more info on the specifics of your comp and project, render settings, system info and of course a screenshot of the timeline and comp window we can't tell you much. Aside from püotential hardware acceleration issues the most likely cause is some weird unexpected interaction with soem other feature or effect, but without knowing any of those details we can't ascertain anything.

If a layer is not showing up in the final render and you are sure it is not a guide layer, the first thing to do is check to ensure that you are using the Active Camera view in the Comp Panel. In the latest After Effects versions, Active Camera is only available if you have a 3D layer in the shot.
You should next check the layer for modified properties by pressing the 'u' key twice. If you have added effects, you can try turning them off.
If that does not help, try setting the Composition Panel to Full resolution, soloing the problem layer, and trying a ram preview.
If you still cannot figure things out, we need to see a screenshot showing the modified properties of the problem layer.
