You may simply make a mess by not having zerored out your shape layer groups and possibly overall scaling of your layer. This matters, as transforms will be inherited and if you're not paying attention to everything being aligned properly, you can get unwanted behaviors. Check that stuff!

If you're not going to change the shape of the path, (that is change the position of the vertices to create a new shape), you can just animate the shape's transform properties.
As Mylenium suggested you probably have some keyframes either on the Shape's transform properties or on the Layer's transform properties.
The danger of shape layers is that you can have animation at the layer level, the group level, and the shape level.
At the shape level there are transform properties on the shape and they are separate from the ability to animate the shape path itself.
