Hello
I found a few previous posts regrding this but not found a solution. I'm posting here with view to finding a solution.
In essence the text tool in Ae is very slow and laggy, even with only a couple of layers in the comp. I have a decent spec Mac pro, decent GPU etc so cant undestand why this is hapeening. I've cleared cache, reset the prefes, turned it off and on again etc to no avail.
Does any one have a fix for this?

Welcome to the community, AdrianH.
Could you share more details? When exactly does After Effects start lagging? Is there a specific font that causes it? Any specific effect? Feel free to share a screen recording to help us understand the issue better.
Note: Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for troubleshooting.
Thanks,
Nishu

I've found this when previewing comps with text layers the previews struggle, but I've not noticed any lag when just using the text tool.
A few years back Photoshop used to have a real issue with text where it would try to connect to external servers every time it activated. Do you have the libraries panel open (that has an internet connection and might be worth trying).
Alternatively, do you have any additional / unusual fonts, could they be causing an issue. Not saying you should remove them, but it might be useful in narrowing down the cause.

Not to necro a thread, but, as I had some spare time and have battled this on and off for a while...
I believe this issue is related to the 'live' renaming of text layers by their content. I think it's really that simple. Name your text layer instead of letting it update automatically, see if the speed does not return no matter what font, not even Faux Bold slows it down.
I can't understand why this simple issue brings After Effects to it's knees, but I have a lot of questions about After Effects performance lately.

That's interesting. I might try to check out your theory. I can see why it might cause an issue if you're putting several paragraphs into a text layer.
