So I realized that when using the pen tool in after effects it always automatically makes curved lines by default for you I found out this was because Rotobezier is always on by default under Mask and Shape Path. I prefer to have this off by default. Is there anyway I can do that? If not, is tthere a way that I can toggle between off and on without going through the menu everytime I want to make a path?

The options should be sticky once you set them in the preferences and the tool options. If they don't, you may have an issue with your file permissions where the preferences can't be stored. I also believe there is an issue on Mac when using tablets that may explain the odd behavior. In such a case of course unplugging the tablet and trying with a mouse might be the answer.

I had this problem too and it was driving me nuts. Finally realized there's a checkbox at the top of the viewer next to the fill/stroke setting and Rotobezier was always checked on. Unchecked it, now I'm fine and it does not automatically start with Rotobezier.
