What do i do to fix my after effects running so slowly

Whenever i work on a comp, the playback is always incredibly slow despite it being on half, and trying to edit the scale or position is always so slow and choppy. is there anything i can do to fix these issues or do i just need a better pc. Currently i've got a gtx 1650 and 16 gb of RAM, do i need to upgrade my cpu or something?. honestly i'm pretty lost

If you install the public beta of After Effects you can view the new Composition Profiler feature (the icon for it is a snail in the Timelime panel) to see exactly how much time each layer is taking.

Most of the time, faster performance in After Effects requires faster processors (assuming you have sufficient RAM).
