Recently watched a tutorial to help speed up the preview, as 10 seconds in it slows down and drops to like, 1 fps. I upgraded my main board & processor to see if that would help, but it didn't. So this tutorial recommended Adobe 14 or below and ticking the Multiprocess option in Preferences. Comments said Adobe no long supports this for current versions of AE. Why is that if it worked so well? Should I find an earlier version of AE to accomodate this feature? Not being able to see what I'm doing is incredibly frustrating. It's set to preview in quarter res, size is 1200 x 300px. I have all my cache files allocated to a larger HD with plenty of space (would it matter if this was an SSD or not?). I'm running nothing, have a CPU meter on display that never reaches over - even playing music from my phone 😕

Whatever issues you have with your RAM preview have nothing to do with the multiprocessing. Even if this function was still there, it wouldn't fix your playback. All it did is launch additional instances i nteh background to fill the caches quicker, which had its own limitations and that's why it was removed. A new method of parallel processing is scheduled to appear in future versions of AE and I believe the current latest Beta supports some basic stuff, but only for final rendering. Anyway, whatever issues you have have nothing to do with any of that, so the only honest answer is that you have to run the usual drill: Check all your drivers, preview settings, hardware acceleration settings and update drivers if need be, be that GPU or audio.

ah, okay! Thank you for explaining. I thought about trying beta, but it's more likely a user issue lol I looked up some more videos and discovered this can be fairly common even with good hardware. I ended up putting the cache dir on its on SSD and letting it play through/load once. After that, I'm not having issues. I think I'll have to let my projects load/build a cache first before I start working on them. 🤔
