Then hold the ALT key and drag a new image onto the first image layer 🤔

See bottom picture? You must select the layer in the comp first.

 

Then hold the ALT key and drag the new layer on top of the selected layer to change it.

Click on the layer in the comp  layer - one

 

Now hold down ALT on the keyboard and drag comp two down onto one keep holding ALT .... 🤔

As Ro Hackett says you should select the layer first then hold down the Alt/Option key and drag and drop your new comp
