Zoom Automatically Goes To Max After Composition Preview = Bad

Hi there, new to AE. Scoured the internet, but can't find any info on this at all. Hoping someone can help with this.

When I go to Preview the Composition (spacebar to play/stop), as soon as I stop playing, the Layer timeline automatically zooms to max. Typically, I have it zoomed in so that I can do more finetuned work. It's a bit frustrating when you constantly have to zoom back in.

Is there any way to turn this auto-zoom off? I've scoured and tested every option that I can find. I don't want it to go to max zoom every time I play a Preview. I want the zoom level to remain the same, unless I manually change it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rebel Squadron,

Welcome to the Community.

That behavior is not usual. The zoom level stays the same until you change it. What's the exact version of Afte Effects you're using. Try resetting the preferences: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-after-effects/td-p/10634342

Thank you Nishu. I'm hoping to learn a lot from the community. The exact version is AE 2021, Version 18.2.1 (Build 8).

I followed the steps in the video. It reset the preferences and the Zoom remained in place when I tested it. After investigating further, I discovered the real reason for the Zoom resetting. Under the Preview panel, it gives you the option to select Full Screen, which I was using so that I could get a better look at the intermediate result. When Full Screen is selected and you play the preview, it'll go to Full Screen as intended. When you stop the preview and it reverts back to the editing view, the Zoom will reset to max. As long as Full Screen is not checked off, the preview will play in the editing view and the Zoom will stay wherever you have it set. I have no idea if this is intentional or not on the programming side, but it is a hassle. It'd be great if there was at least the option to reset the Zoom or not. Otherwise, problem solved.

Thank you for helping me get it figured out.

@Sciolla - I would suggest opening a new bug with the version of AE you are using and what your bug scenario is as this one was marked as resolved.

Sadly, as far as I used AE, it was always so.

It's absolutely not "not usual". I hate previewing full screen for this reason. If I do, everytime I exit the preview I find my comp zommed out and I have to zoom it in back. Very annoying if you're trying and trying small changes in an animation.
