___ARRgghhgh - I imported several Ai files, but then this happened....

Why does one show up with the regular Ai icon, then one show up with a weird multiple icon

and adds "[001-003]" to the file name?

Also, that imported file doesn't show up (preview)

Both files are close to identical... I rebooted, emptied cache etc. - but still no change...

You have inadvertently check Image Sequence when you imported the file. Remove it from the Project Panel and carefully review the options when you import it again.
