Difference matte is deleting my object, not the background

I'm trying to pull a soaring eagle out of its background. Using Difference Matte in AE, I can make the eagle disappear from my background, but I can't make the background disappear and leave the eagle. It seems to make no difference whether I have the Diff Matte effect on the top layer or the second layer. Can anyone suggest what I may be doing wrong?

Is it just me (who is new to it) or is After Effects extremely painful and uncooperative? It's latest folly is to display a layer that is turned off, and refuse to let me see the only layer that is turned on.

We can't answer any technical questions about technical issues if you don't provide the necessary details like system info, composition settings and so on. The usual applies: Start by checking your caches, update your system's graphics driver, verify hardware acceleration settings.

The Difference Keyy issue is none, either. Keys and channnels can be at any point inverted and shifted around, assigned as track mattes to other layers and so on. It may just require layer duplicates, pre-composing the layer(s) to separate comps and additional effects. Not everything can be done directly with slapping on a single effect to a layer. Again, we can't know anything about the details since you haven't provided a screenshot or info about your correct settings. Vaguely mumbling about is not really helpful, no offense.
