Masking type to a shape

I am trying to mask some type to a shape. I have drawn the shape into after effects and i am wanting the type to follow the path of the shape. I have used a tutorial where I copy the path of the shape onto the mask of the type however it is just creating a mask of a rectangle not the shape that I drew. Any suggestions on how to mask type to slightly more complicated shapes?
