Masking

Masking confuses me, after the points are joined everything turns black and i won't be able to add my effects. What do i do please? I'm working on a teleportation effect but to do this i will have to keyframe the mask expansion but i can't do this since my background no longer exists.

It looks like you have a single closed mask on a single layer. Everything is normal. If you want to see the background then you need to have a copy of the original footage without a mask below the current layer. 

I think it is time for you to spend a couple of hours with the User Guide.
