Media Encoder erratic behaviour

Very occasionally Media Encoder launches in just a few seconds and AE projects appear almost instantly. It's clearly able to operate like this. But the vast majority of the time it takes between 3 and 8 minutes to launch, then there's a 1 in 4 chance of the project never appearing and, if it does, another 1 in 4 change of the fabled 'failure to connect to dynamic server' issue or simply getting stuck mid-render and requiring a force-quit. Yes, restarting often helps. Or reinstalling AME. But clearly those aren't good solutions on a regular basis.

This is not an isolated incident on one machine. I work with three studios of 10-20 Macs and every single one of them experiences some Media Encoder failure every month. We've long since come to accept the erratic launching (the minutes of inexplicable chugging), but as of the last 18 months the whole application feels like it's barely holding together.

Does anyone know of any big changes to the architecture that have resulted in this? Maybe something that makes it particularly susceptible to system conditions (permissions, some combination of processes) caused by a workflow or habit we have? Should we (can we) protect the fragile dynamic link server in some way that Adobe cannot do from within the code itself?

Thanks.
