Text layer disappears when hiding separate video layer

After Effects v17.1.0

I'm trying to export this comp without the video layer. When I hide my video layer at the very bottom, my text layer also gets hidden. The toggle layer icon on my text layer at the top also has a grey circle in the center of it and I can't figure out what it means. Any ideas?

When I toggle the video layer off, my text layer disappears.

Start the troubleshooting by soloing the text layer. Reveal the modes panel, check for modified properties. My first guess is that the text layer has a blend mode applied.
