I'm new to After Effects, how does one do an orgainc "bleed" of like paint spilling or smoke cloud blending into background?  I'm not sure what they call it, so hard to find a tutorial.

Thanks

Have a look at this for the paint effect.

When it comes to smoke and clouds, I made good experience with fractal noises.

A lot of this stuff is simply based on actual footage of paint drips, cloud tanks or ink on absorbent paper - shot in neutral colors like white and black and then recolored or used as mattes. The irony in fact is that it's often even more cost-effective and quicker than elaborate particle effects or endless fiddling with Fractal Noise patterns and that sort of thing. Depneds of course what look you're after...
