The timecode effect simply uses the default system font, meaning Arial/ MS Symbol on a Windows system for instance.

I've been trying to figure this out for ages.

You can change the font by pressing the "options" button of the NUMBERS effect and do some basic styling. But there are some limitations.

The NUMBERS effect only has the options for specific timecodes that are all whole numbers 24fps, 25fps, 30fps. So you're out of luck if you want to use any other time code or use the Time Source as compositon. Which would be ideal, by the way. For example, I'm trying to style timecode that is 23.976. But it's also a problem if you want to show 60fps or 59.94fps or any other timecode as well.

There might be a way using Red Giant's Numbers effect and use some expressions, but I don't really understand how to make that work. There's some useful info here, but it doesn't solve the problem.

After speaking with a few GRFX friends, I've figured out a way to stylize any timecode.

Use a regular text layer. Style how you want. Create an expression on source text

timeToCurrentFormat()

It looks good now! But if the font isn't monospace, you end up with characters moving all over the place.

To fix that, you need monospacer.  ($10 from AEScripts).

If the colon's look out of whack, just tweak the Y threshold. Explanation at 2 minutes here

I don't love how much longer it takes to render vs. plain old Numbers, but it'll work.
