upload/edit vector path shape in AE

Explorer ,
Sep 20, 2019 Sep 20, 2019

Is it possible to upload and edit a somewhat complex path shape in AE, that was created in a different program? Specifically, I'm talking about editing the nodes of the path, making further use of the bezier pen tool in AE. The path shape prior to upload should therefore be non-rasterized.

I tried importing file as an .svg but i didn't seem to provide me the path/node editing option. I'm not interested in image tracing a raster image. There must be another way. Thanks.

I wasn't able to import .svg files into AE ever. SO my workaround always was this:

1. Open file in Illustrator and save it as EPS file.

2. Import EPS file into AE and place it inside the composition

3. Right-click on EPS layer and select `Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer` - new Shape Layer gets created.

4. Modify Shape Layer with Pen tool as you wish.

You should be able to put that .svg into Illustrator where you can either:

  1. Copy the paths from the layer in Illustrator and paste them on a solid or into the path property of a shape.
  2. separate all the individual paths onto new layers and save it as a .ai file. Import that file into After Effects as "Composition - Retain Layer Sizes." Open the newly created comp that is the same name as the file you named it, select all the layers and create shapes from vector layers
