I've been saving alot of copies of my project out of fear of progress lost, but because of this it's creating alot of copies of the files in the project.
Every time I try to delete them though it corrupts my file. It's starting to cause an issue, the copies go up to 240 by now 😞
There may be some issues with the document.
Try to save it as a XFL, then back as FLA (with a new name). Then try the select unused and delete them.
I have experienced some file corruption with CS5.5. Opening the same file in CS6 may allow you to work around the issue.

via the save as function, ive just been doing save as "filename[number].fla"

and that's causing library duplicates?

seems so, i cant really think of any other cause

It does not make any sense, mate.
If you're saving as, you are saving a copy of the whole FLA under an new name, but are not changing anything in the internal structure of your file.
To get those duplicates of your content internally, you must be doing something else, while working in Flash.
Check their use count in the Library. If some have zero, you can delete them. There is an option to select unused items.
If they really are duplicates and they are all used, to clean them up you will need first to do some swapping so that only one of those identical videos and bitmaps is used in your file.

ah i completely forgot that this was happening:
it could easily just be an issue with my puter and not the actual program, though. this only happens when i start deleting the copies though (even the 0 use ones)

restart your computer and retry whatever you were doing.

i always save fla's with increasing version number appended to the file name and have never had that occur. ie, something else is causing that.

I think i did figure out where the copies from. Not the program or my computer, I just have OCD which leads to alot of accidental copying ^_^;

there's no protection with copying symbols unless you're about to start some major editing and you want to be able to quickly return to the pre-edited symbol.
that's still not going to protect anything unless you exceed your undo limit.
