converting drawing to symbol in animate changes the drawing

When I try to convert a drawing to symbol in animate, it drastically changes the drawing (filled part of it with red, instead of white with drawing red strokes over it). I then discovered that if, before converting it to a symbol, I cut and paste it, it does the same thing. Screenshots below.  I have had nothing but trouble with Paintbucket in Animate, and had used it in making the drawing. I have no idea if this figures into the problem here.

This tends to happen whenever there are too many anchor points on a shape. You can see the anchor points with the Subselection tool (A).

Select parts of the shape with the Lasso tool (L) and press the Smoothen function a couple times in the Properties panel to shift the anchor points a little bit, then try converting to symbol again.

But I used the brush tool to draw it. I didn't think anchor points
came into play with the brush tool.

Animate uses vectors not pixels, everything has anchor points.
