Cut or Erase in shapes

New Here ,

Hello there,

I'm working on trying to create an ad using multiple layers and I'm wondering if it's possible to to cut or erase in specific shapes.

Basically I have a top layer that is one colour, a layer under that which is text, and a bottom layer under that.

What I want to do is basically animate the top layer being cut out in certain shapes (such as feet) until the text in the middle layer can be seen.

I'm hoping that it will be possible to do this easily by cutting or erasing the top layer away by repeatedly cutting out a shape  till essentially the top layer is gone, and try to avoid doing this by literally using the erase tool to draw out the shapes by hand.

Is this possible?

From your description, it sounds as though you could either do this destructively by punching out shapes in the top layer, or through use of masking against that layer with a mask layer.
