Editing duplicate symbol changes the duplicated (original) symbol

Hi, I have a symbol (movie clip) that I've duplicated in the library. When I edit that symbol in the library, or on the stage, it changes (makes the same edits to) the original symbol, i.e., the symbol on which the duplicate is based. Am I missing something here? What's the point of duplicating symbols if what happens to one symbol happens to its duplicate? All I'm trying to do here is use the same movie clip twice, but change them slightly. There are multiple animated textboxes that pop out when the corresponding buttons are pressed. I want to change the text on each, but keep the overall animation the same. Take a look at the attached animate file. Sorry if it's a mess. I'm still learning to work efficiently, which I assume involves using animations multiple times when possible, instead of animating everything individually every time. There's a symbol in the library called "Infobox_1" that I tried duplicating and naming "Infobox_2," but when I changed Infobox_2, the same changes were made to Infobox_1. Again, what's the point of that? Maybe there's an easier way? I'm so close to being done with this thing. Okay, for some reason I can't attach my animate file to this post. Why's that, by the way? Maybe I can email it to whomever responds? I need help.

I keep getting this message when I try to attach my animate file:

Correct the highlighted errors and try again.

  • The attachment's automation journey test 7.fla content type (application/octet-stream) does not match its file extension and has been removed.
