when ever I load up adobe animate the home page is completely gray. If i want to start a new animation I have to go all the way to files and then new, it's incredibly annoying.

reset your preferences. the most reliable way to do that is:
assign a custom keyboard shortcut, if none now exists.uninstall animate including preferences per https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html
then reinstall animate
confirm your custom shortcut was reset
does the problem persist?
