Hallo,

Click and drag from the color swatch in your toolbar or Properties.
Then you can colorpick any color on the screen, regardless or nesting hierarchy.

This trick does work for me when I use the Properties > color and style > Fill (or stroke). But the color options in the Tools Menu have always been super buggy for me. An other example: When I select a fill in the canvas and change the color in the Tools menu nothin happens. When I do the smane in Properties it does work. I'm still one update behind because of the variable stroke width issue, so maybe it got fixed. But I have had this issue for ages.

Yeah mate, it is supposed to work like this, and it works fine on my singe-monitor machine, but Animate in recent years is just drowning in issues.
Your problems might be related to display scaling other than 100% or multi-monitor setup, or who knows what...

Hi Claudia and Nick,
In my case it's not a display scaling issue on my side. That was a pain to find out aswell years ago. It might be a multi-monitor setup but I found a work around that suits me.
This is the way I work:
1) select the fill you want to change. 2) Click and drag to the color you want. I can actually get a color from a browser in my other screen this way and is very handy now and then. But I do have experienced moment like Claudia that this even didn't work.
Hope this works for you too. Let me know when soething is unclear.
