Selling Desktop Apps with a licence code

The Adobe Air forum seemed to be closed to new posts when I just tried now.

I have been using Animate to create and publish apps with Air to iOS + Android for many years. Now I'm considering selling some of my apps on Desktop on a website, directly to customers.

Is there anyone on here with experience selling desktop software on their website? Building a desktop app for Mac (.dmg file) seems the best result. The user just has to download the Air plugin to use it. On PC it's also possible, but a nasty popup will appear saying this is from an unverified publisher (Harman say this can't be fixed due to a certificate problem anyway..)

So my question is: Is there a way to protect your software with a licence key? If anyone can share the method for this and how it can be technically done? For example:

1) The user buys your licence key (using an automated payment site like ejunkie)

2) The user installs your desktop app. From within the app, or on a entry screen, enters the licence code which unlocks the app.

3) But.. how do you stop this code being shared with your software on free download sites?

Please share links to your own software or any advice here please!

Thanks
