Converted character and background into single object, how do I restore previous versions?

I recently was working on my animation and forgot ot lock the charcter layers when I was working on the background. I converted different shapes within the background into a single object, without realizing the character was included. I had been saving throughout the process. How can I restore previous saved versions so I don't have to start from scratch?
